SWD CEO Discusses Dyslexia Advocacy and Early Screening with Matt Hancock MP

Darren Clark, CEO of dyslexia positivity movement Succeed With Dyslexia, recently met with Matt Hancock MP at Portcullis House to discuss dyslexia advocacy and the importance of early screening.

During the meeting, the MP shared his personal experiences growing up with dyslexia and recounted the challenges he faced, such as struggling with reading and writing and feeling different from his classmates and friends due to his reading challenges. He also emphasised the crucial role played by supportive teachers, family members, and specialised programs in helping him navigate his educational journey.

The discussion went on to highlight the significant impact a dyslexia diagnosis can have on both school and work life. Mr. Hancock explained how the diagnosis he received led to tailored educational strategies and accommodations, which improved his understanding of his learning needs and ultimately enhanced his performance. He also touched on the positive effects it had on his mental health and confidence, noting the emotional relief and validation that came with the diagnosis. The Dyslexia Screening Bill, aimed at reducing illiteracy rates, was also a key topic of discussion.

Both Mr. Hancock and SWD CEO Darren Clark expressed their ongoing advocacy for early screening, stressing the benefits of identifying dyslexia at an early stage and the power of early intervention.
